The AP European History summer assignment must be submitted by Thursday, August 24, 2023. This assignment is worth 100 points.
Friday, August 25: Read text pages 56 to 69 and the supplemental articles by Burckhardt, Thorndyke, and Krey. Please complete a short paper, no more than two typed pages (double spaced) which provides a brief summary of each author's perspectives about the Renaissance. This paper is due Monday, August, 28 .
Tuesday, September 5: Students should watch the Crash Course Video (posted under the "Links" pull down tab) on the Reformation. They should then list the 5 most significant things they learned from the video. For each item on the list, students should then explain WHY they chose that item as significant. This work will be collected Wednesday, September 6.
Wednesday, September 6: Students should compile a list of all the events, along with the date of the event, which contributed to the breakdown of the medieval manor and the authority of the Catholic Church. Students should complete another list, with people, who also contributed to the breakdown of the manor and their authority of the church. These lists will be collected Thursday, September 7. Tuesday, September 12: The Unit 1 test will be administered during class. Students should read text pages 99 - 120 and the Reed article entitled "The Expansion of Europe" for the next class period. This will mark the start of Unit 2. Students will need to write a short paper, double spaced, summarizing the main points made in the article by Reed. The paper must be submitted Wednesday, September 13.
Friday, September 15: Please read text pages 121 to 130 and create a list and a brief intro paragraph (proper AP style) of the "Sine Qua Nons" of Spanish national consolidation. This will be explained in class. This assignment is due Monday, September 18.
Thursday, September 21: Students will compose an intro paragraph, using the proper AP format as discussed in class earlier this week. The prompt for this intro paragraph is as follows: "In what ways and to what extent did the Treaty of Westphalia mark a major turning point in European history?" This intro paragraph is due Friday, September 22. The paragraph is to be typed, double spaced, and in 12 font.
Wednesday, October 4: Students will write an introductory paragraph, using the proper AP format, in class today. The students will choose an appropriate prompt from Unit 2. There will be a 20 minute time limit.
Thursday, October 5: The Unit 2 test will be administered in class today.
Friday, October 6: Read text pages 199 - 224. Students should also compile a list, to turn in for a grade, of the things they consider to be most essential for the consolidation of each of Austria, Prussia, and Russia. Students should choose the three most significant factors which enabled these three empires to rise to prominence. For example, what was the role of the ruling family dynasties in helping each empire become a sovereign nation? This work is due Monday, October 9:
Wednesday, October 11: Read text pages 257 - 273 prior to the next class period. Students should be able to identify the new, modern aspects of the social structure and global economic trends as well as specific examples of where these social structures and economic trends did not change and remained traditional. Viewing the Crash Course video on Prussia and Russia, posted under the "Links" pull-down tab, will help students in their understanding of the material.
Thursday, October 12: Students will complete a list of IDs from pages 282 to 296 of the text. These brief IDs are due Friday, October 13.
Friday, October 27: An in-class essay will be assigned for class today and is due at the end of the period. The strict time limit is necessary to help students prepare for the time requirements on the actual AP Exam. Students must use the proper AP intro-paragraph format.
Monday, October 30: The Unit 4 test will be administered during class today. Students also need to read the article by Crane Brinton, text pages 349 to 370, and complete the French Revolution assignment. The assignment is due Friday, November 10.
Friday, November 10: Students will complete the take-home DBQ on the French Revolution. You are on your honor to take no more than 1 hour of planning and writing time. The official DBQ rubric is posted on the home page of the website. Students who are not familiar with the way to approach an AP DBQ need to see me during and academy period or during my virtual office hours. The DBQ essay is due Monday, November 13. Monday, November 13: Students will be assigned to describe the relationship between Napoleon's internal (domestic) and external (foreign) policy agendas. This should be done in two short paragraphs. The assignment will be explained in class. This is due Wednesday, November 15.
Friday, November 17: Students will begin work in class on a DBQ pre-write exercise for an essay about Napoleon. Having completed the pre-write, students will then construct an introductory paragraph, in proper AP format. This paragraph, along with the pre-write, is due Monday, November, 20.
Tuesday, November 22: The semester exam review packet will be handed out to students today.
Thursday, November 30: The Unit 5 test (Chapters 9 and 10) covering the French Revolution and Napoleon will be administered in class today.
Friday, December 1: Students will read text pages 443 to 457 and write a one sentence summary of the different philosophical "isms" presented on those pages. These one sentence summaries are due Monday, December 4. Students are also required to submit these 1 sentence definitions to Turnitin.com.
